The angle brackets [U:2770] and [U:2771] are used as mathematical symbols: to denote the scalar product, quantum vectors, matrix elements, averages. In philology, such brackets can be seen in the description of graphemes – letters, hieroglyphs, ideograms.
Despite the definite purpose, angle brackets may often be used as dingbats – text decorations. Such graphical icons may draw a lot of attention to a nickname or some important piece of text in an advertising creative. Plus, you can easily make a beautiful and extraordinary ornament using these symbols.
Heavy Left Angle Bracket is considered to be the opening one, whereas usually combined with the Right Angle Bracket – [U:2771].
